Infrastructure management specialist Shine Salur will be sharing her insights into creating greater equity in engineering at the forthcoming GeoAsia8 conference.

Ms Salur, Industry Development Director at Siemens, will be speaking at the IGS Diversity Committee (DC) session on the conference's first day on June 10. Themed 'Beneath the Hard Hat: Real Lives, Real Barriers, Real Change', the session aims to explore identity and inclusion in engineering through lived experiences.

Moderated by Committee Lead Laura Carbone, the session will also include an introduction to the work and aims of the Committee, and a live 'quiz' with the audience on DEI issues.

IGS DC member Alicja Borysewicz, Secretary of the Australasian Chapter of IGS (ACigs), which is organizing GeoAsia8, is overseeing the conference's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) areas.

She said: "We're delighted to have Shine sharing her insights on advancing equity in engineering, transport, and infrastructure. She actively champions sustainable engineering in road infrastructure and advocates for diversity, inclusion, and women in leadership roles, so we look forward to getting her perspective.

"Attendees can expect to learn about inclusive leadership and workplace equity, real-world DEI applications, an understanding on how DEI impacts industry innovation and collaboration, and how DEI influences career growth and professional development."

She added: "To build strong structures we need to empower strong voices and this session aims to reinforce this important message by championing a more diverse professional environment in the industry."

The 8th Asian Conference on Geosynthetics takes place in Brisbane, Australia, on June 10-13, this year, and will explore the theme 'Geosynthetics: pioneering lasting solutions for the Earth'.

The IGS Diversity Task Force formed in fall 2023 and was upgraded to full Committee status this year. To find out more, or to get involved, contact Laura Carbone through the IGS Secretariat's office at igssec@geosyntheticssociety.org.
