A busy program of social and educational events engaged young engineers at the recent 8th Asian Conference on Geosynthetics (GeoAsia8) in Brisbane, Australia.

Around 250 students and young professionals were among those who attended the conference, organized by the Australasian Chapter of the IGS, known as ACigs, from countries including India, China, Korea, the USA, Canada, Kazakhstan, Taiwan, Thailand and Malaysia. Additionally, eight students benefited from travel bursaries from the IGS Foundation.

The IGS Young Members Committee (YMC) ensured delegates were exposed to a range of technical sessions, keynote presentations, and workshops led by industry experts, as well as fun social events.

YMC GeoAsia8 co-organizer Ashray Saxena said: "A highlight was the Corporate Case Study Competition, which allowed students to engage directly with real-world geosynthetics challenges presented by leading companies. Socially, students participated in dedicated Young Members events including a welcome gathering and social dinner, both designed to foster connections among peers and professionals from around the world."

Mr. Saxena added student feedback was very positive, with many appreciating the chance to engage directly with industry leaders and researchers, make new connections and learn about career paths in the geosynthetics industry.

YMC chair Dr. Viviana Mangraviti said: "Having students attend events like GeoAsia8 is immensely valuable for them and the future of the geosynthetics industry. International networking and collaboration are key in these geopolitically uncertain times and it is important to keep strengthening ties and building community across our global network.

"Indeed, despite the international difficulties, we also acknowledged an award to an Iranian student who, due to visa reasons, was unable to attend the conference.

"Overall, it was a great result seeing so many people participating in our initiatives and we hope to build on this to ensure continued innovation, involvement and growth within our field."

GeoAsia8 took place on June 10-13, and was themed 'Geosynthetics: pioneering lasting solutions for the Earth'. GeoAsia9 will take place in Ahmedabad, India, in November 2029.

Formed in 2012, the YMC is a forum for IGS members aged under 36 to build bonds, network and get career advice. The group runs regular events and opportunities to support members' development in the geosynthetics industry. To find out more, visit this link or email youngmembers@geosyntheticssociety.org.
