IGS Launches Survey To Better Understand Its Members

IGS members will soon receive an email inviting them to respond to a survey.

Led by the IGS's Diversity Committee (DC), the questionnaire is designed to get a better understanding of the demographic of current IGS members, to help cultivate a more representative Society. Its formulation is being supported by consultant Snéha Khilay and IGS Secretariat Manager and IGS DC member Elise Oatman.

Leading this initiative, Committee member Mathilde Riot said: "Creating a more Representative organization is a key strategic goal for the IGS. Engaging directly with our membership in this way ensures we understand who they are so we can better meet their needs.

"We want to get as accurate a picture as possible of the composition of IGS members so we can assess any gaps and implement solutions, whether it be improving disabled access at IGS conferences or ensuring we have more translated materials for wider communication."

The survey is due to be distributed to GeoAsia8 conference registrants this week and will also be accessible via a QR code at the event. A similar approach is planned for the upcoming EuroGeo8 conferences later this year, with a global survey to follow in 2026. All responses will remain anonymous.

Ms Riot added: "The more of us that respond, the more accurate the measurement of diversity will be, and the more relevant the IGS's responses to development needs."

Following the survey, the IGS DC will produce a detailed analysis for distribution. Actions are already underway to recruit more women into the industry and have greater involvement with engineering in schools.

The IGS Diversity Task Force formed in fall 2023, and this year was upgraded to full Committee status. It currently has 23 members working towards raising greater awareness about diversity issues, improving member empowerment, and growing networking opportunities.
