The top papers to feature in two respected industry journals last year have been revealed.

The annual contest run by Geosynthetics International (GI), the IGS's official journal, and the Geotextiles and Geomembranes (G&G) journal aims to highlight outstanding new research or developments that advance the understanding of the geosynthetics discipline.

This year both journals chose just one winner and runner-up from their respective publications.

Best papers in Volume 31 of Geosynthetics International, whose Editor-in-Chief is Robert J. Bathurst, were:

  • (Winner) Bathurst, R. J. and Naftchali, F. M. (2024). 'Probabilistic analysis for the reinforced fill over void problem'. Geosynthetics International, 31, No. 6, 835-861
  • (Runner-up) Quinteros, V. S. and Fannin, R. J. (2024). 'Durability of geogrid in a sloped reinforced soil wall after 25 years in service'. Geosynthetics International, 31, No. 6, 862-874

Votes in the annual contest were cast by GI's Editorial Board members only, with the Editor-in-Chief and Editors not allowed to vote.

Meanwhile, Geotextiles and Geomembranes (G&G), whose Editor-in-Chief is IGS Past President Chungsik Yoo, awarded best papers in Volume 52 to:

  • (Winner) Kewei Fan, Weilie Zou, Pan Zhang, Xiequn Wang, Yang Shen (2024). 'Laboratory investigation and theoretical analysis of lateral pressure exerted by expansive soils on retaining walls with expanded polystyrene geofoam block upon water infiltration'. Geotextiles and Geomembranes, 52(3), 332-341.
  • (Runner-up) Fahimeh M. Naftchali and Richard J. Bathurst (2024). 'Numerical modelling of reinforced fill over a void considering rate-dependent stiffness of the reinforcement'. Geotextiles and Geomembranes, 52(4), 635-653.

Here, G&G's Associate Editors and Editorial Board members were asked to identify the most exceptional paper published during the year. Evaluations focused on each paper's contribution to the field, specifically, its potential to provide significant new insights or make a high-impact advance.

Both publications congratulated the authors on their winning papers and significant contribution to the geosynthetics discipline.

IGS members can get free access to Geosynthetics International and Geotextiles and Geomembranes.
